Tenebrae is the Latin term for “darkness.” Accordingly, darkness is a major theme in this service. Hymns are sung and texts from the Bible are read, but the lights are dimmed to reflect the darkness that covered the land while Jesus suffered on the cross. It is a service that encourages sober contemplation of Jesus’ suffering and death. And yet, this day is not ultimately somber; it is good! By his death, Jesus endured the punishment that was ours, rendering us holy before God.
